We are pleased to announce our juror this year is folk artist and pastel painter - Teri Sloat. You may remember her as she and husband Robert were our featured artists in August of 2023. Teri’s art brings her imaginative stories to life using bold, pure color and light. She is excited to contribute as a Jurist; you can meet Teri during the opening Art Walk Reception & Critique to be held on Saturday October 5th. In addition, you will experience the magic of her works as the fall lobby show will be featuring the Sloat’s art.
Teri Sloat grew up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, a place known for inspiring creativity with its idyllic environment of evergreens, rivers and rolling hills. However, the most notable impression of time in Teri's life comes from 12 years spent on the Alaskan Yukon Delta immersed in educational programs assisting those of the Yupik Language. The beauty of the Yupik culture serves as a mainstay influence on Teri's writings, sense of storytelling and illustrations. Currently living in Northern California with her husband, artist Robert Sloat, Teri paints full time as an illustrator, plein air painter and fine artist. She has authored and illustrated 25 children's books, sells prints of her illustrations and exhibits her works in a variety of galleries in California and across the U.S.
An expert conveyor of both the representational and the imagined, Teri has a strong sense of how to impact the viewer with design elements, composition, color theory, and what she defines as an essential to her work, story telling. Narratives are Teri's forethought to lay out the foundation of her work. Teri says: "Writing has taught me to paint pictures with words; painting has taught me to tell my stories with shapes and colors and composition.... My art has always been about telling a story. Whether I am looking out at the landscape around me as I set up my easel, or glancing inward on the visual narrative spinning in my mind, I am always telling myself a story."
